This help file should be used with version 2.1.2 of Fetch.
This version has the following new features and bug fixes:
Since 2.1.1:
• Fetch 2.1.2 is a “fat” binary, with native code for both 680x0 and PowerPC-based Macintoshes.
• Fetch now opens and saves Anarchie Bookmark (AURL) files. These allow quick access to specific files and directories on the Internet.
• The Copy command now puts a Universal Resource Locator (URL) for the selected items or the current directory (if nothing is selected) on the clipboard.
• URLs can be used in the Change Directory, Get Directories and Files, and Get File dialog boxes. These make it possible to access files and directories on other servers with one command.
• URLs and “slack” URLs of the form “host:path” can be pasted into the signon dialog and shortcuts dialog, for easier access to files and directories mentioned in email messages and news postings.
• A new “Add Shortcut...” menu item allows the quick creation of a single shortcut.
• There is a preference to control whether the signon dialog is automatically opened when Fetch starts up.
• Cmd-Q quits Fetch even when the signon dialog is up.
• Fetch can safely be launched into the background.
• Fetch now provides notification whenever it completes a network operation in the background.
• Fetch now launches post-processing applications into the background.
• Fetch now remembers the window position of the signon dialog.
• A bug in uploading files over slow links was fixed.
• A bug in downloading binary files shorter than 128 bytes was fixed.
Since 2.1:
• The connect dialog is now modeless and moveable, so you can switch applications without dismissing it.
• AppleSingle version 2 is now supported.
• File lists can contain up to 32,000 names (rather than 1,000).
• Fetch no longer writes to nil (so it is compatible with EvenBetterBusError).
• A problem with Cancel taking 2 minutes has been corrected.
• A problem with Close Connection… hanging (when using ARA or MacSLIP) has been corrected.
• The Send FTP Command… feature can now send file list commands (i.e. NLST and LIST).
• The Send FTP Command… can automatically prompt for a password after a USER command.
• Compatibility with Peter Lewis’s FTPd has been improved.
• Other minor bug fixes.
Since 2.0.6:
• There are new commands to view files and file lists in text windows.
• Fetch can optionally display size and date-last-modified information for files on most Unix servers.
• Fetch windows can be resized, and Fetch remembers their position between sessions.
• Fetch Help can be copied and printed.
• Fetch can be configured to automatically open certain kinds of files, for instance compressed archives, with the appropriate applications.
• Fetch can optionally save downloaded files to a special folder, without prompting you each time.
• Fetch now supports Balloon Help and the required Apple Events.
• The directory pop-up menu is now more Mac-like, showing just the ancestors of the current directory.
• The Delete command now works with directories that have files or sub-directories in them.
• Fetch will optionally display informational messages from the host.
• The network transcript can be conveniently viewed in a separate window.
• Fetch will now optionally translate between ISO and Mac character sets.
• Many minor features were added and many bugs were fixed.
Since 2.0.5:
• Changed About box to permit distribution, updated help.
Since 2.0.4:
• Fixed a bug with certain Unix servers that caused dates to show up in the file list.
• Always shows icons (if only the file-or-directory icon).
• Use condensed type to fit more of long file names in the file list.
Since 2.0.3:
• Fixed a bug that caused certain commands to fail if Fetch was run on a system besides System 7.0.
Since 2.0.2:
• Fixed a problem with the FTP server on Northstar IBM RTs.

• Changed the Get File button to only download files (and not try to change directory first). Return, Enter, and double-clicking still try to change directory before downloading.

• Multiple files and folder hierarchies can be uploaded and downloaded.

• Fetch can be customized to recognize certain file name suffixes and download matching files in the proper mode.
• Support for uploading and downloading files in AppleSingle format was added.
• Support for downloading files in MacBinary I format was added.
• Interpretation of various file formats can be disabled in the Preferences dialog box.
• Fetch can be told to keep connections alive (by regularly sending “do-nothing” commands to the server).
• Users can send arbitrary FTP commands to the FTP server (such as the command specifying mini-disk passwords on CMS systems).
